Celsius and Red Bull get compared constantly, usually as "the healthy one" versus "the original." The labels tell a more interesting story. Red Bull is actually the lower-caffeine can, and Celsius's real advantage is that it has no sugar.
Here's how they compare can for can, and which one makes more sense on a workday.

Caffeine: Celsius has more, by a lot
This surprises a lot of people. Red Bull has the reputation, but per ounce it's one of the milder energy drinks on the shelf. Celsius packs nearly twice the caffeine per ounce.
| Drink | Caffeine |
|---|---|
| Celsius Essentials (16 oz) | 270mg |
| Celsius Original (12 oz) | 200mg |
| Red Bull (20 oz) | About 189mg |
| Red Bull (16 oz) | About 151mg |
| Before Work Fuel (1 scoop) | 150mg |
| Red Bull (12 oz) | About 114mg |
| Coffee (8 oz brewed) | About 96mg |
| Red Bull (8.4 oz) | 80mg |
The FDA has cited 400mg a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects in healthy adults. One Celsius uses half of that. One small Red Bull uses a fifth. If you're caffeine-sensitive, already drinking coffee, or tend to have a second can in the afternoon, that difference matters more than anything else on the label. Sugar, calories and sweeteners
This is where Celsius wins clearly over original Red Bull. An 8.4 oz Red Bull carries 27 grams of sugar and 110 calories, mostly from sugar and glucose. Bigger cans scale up from there. Celsius has no sugar and about 10 calories.
If sugar is your concern, though, Red Bull Sugarfree closes that gap. It has zero sugar and 10 calories, with the same 80mg of caffeine as the original. The trade-off is the sweetener: Red Bull Sugarfree uses acesulfame K plus either aspartame or sucralose depending on the can, while Celsius Original uses sucralose. All are FDA-approved. What else is in each can
Red Bull keeps it simple: caffeine, taurine and four B vitamins (niacin, B6, B12 and pantothenic acid), plus 105mg of sodium. Nothing hidden in a blend.
Celsius adds more. Its 1,810mg proprietary blend includes taurine, guarana, green tea extract, glucuronolactone and ginger, along with vitamin C, B vitamins and chromium. Because it's a blend, you get the total but not the individual doses. The green tea extract is behind most of Celsius's metabolism marketing, and any thermogenic effect is modest at best.
Neither one is a hydration drink. Red Bull's 105mg of sodium is a little more than Celsius's, but neither comes close to replacing what you lose sweating through a hot shift.
Price per can
They land close to each other. A 12-pack of 8.4 oz Red Bull commonly runs around $22 to $24, or roughly $1.85 to $2 a can, and single cans are more. Celsius in a 12-pack typically lands around $1.75 a can online and drops lower on sale. Gas-station singles run higher for both.
The bigger difference is caffeine per dollar. Because a Celsius has about two and a half times the caffeine of a small Red Bull, it delivers more caffeine for the money. Whether that's a good thing depends on how much caffeine you actually want.
Powder changes the math for both. Before Work Fuel is $1.67 a serving, or $1.33 on subscription. We broke down the full cost comparison in energy drink powder vs cans.
Celsius vs Red Bull: which is better for work?
- Pick Celsius if you want zero sugar and a strong single dose, and you're not stacking it with much other caffeine.
- Pick Red Bull Sugarfree if you want zero sugar and a gentler 80mg dose. On a long day, it's easier to space two of these out than to manage one 200mg can.
- Skip original Red Bull as a daily habit. Twenty-seven grams of sugar per small can adds up fast over a work week.
The common problem with every can is that the dose is fixed. You get 80mg or 200mg whether it's a short day or a 14-hour one.
Before Work Fuel is a powdered energy drink at 150mg of caffeine per scoop: one for a normal day, two for a long one. It's zero sugar, with 80mg sodium, 75mg potassium and seven B vitamins per scoop, and its key actives are printed at stated amounts. Made in the USA with global ingredients and third-party tested.
