Is Gatorade Good for Working in the Heat?

It works, and for a short hot afternoon it is far better than plain water. Across a full shift it has two problems.

Regular Gatorade carries about 34 grams of sugar in a 20 oz bottle. One is fine. Three across a shift is over 100 grams of sugar, and the rise and drop that follows compounds the flat, foggy feeling you were drinking it to fix.

  • Weakness and fatigue out of proportion to the work
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness, especially standing up
  • Dull, persistent headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Muscle cramps in the legs or abdomen
  • Fast, weak pulse
  • Dark urine or not urinating much
  • Trouble focusing on simple tasks

The tell most crews recognize is the combination of heavy sweating with cool, clammy, pale skin. If a coworker looks gray and unsteady on their feet, treat it as heat exhaustion until proven otherwise.

What makes it dangerous is how easily it gets explained away as being tired or hitting the afternoon wall. The person in trouble is often the last to notice. Watching each other is the most useful thing a crew does in a heat wave.

Red flags that mean heat stroke and 911, not a break in the shade:

  • Confusion, slurred speech, or behavior that seems off

  • Severe, throbbing headache
  • Vomiting that will not stop

Call emergency services first, then start cooling: shade or AC, remove heavy gear, cold water on the skin, ice packs at the neck, armpits, and groin. Do not put someone in a vehicle and drive. Survival depends on how fast core temperature comes down.

What to Do If You Have Heat Exhaustion

Stop working. Get out of the heat. Then:

  • Sit or lie down somewhere cool, and loosen or remove heavy clothing and gear
  • Sip cool water steadily. Do not chug, and skip ice-cold water in large volumes, which can bring on nausea and cramping
  • Sip something with sodium and potassium in it rather than water alone
  • Cool the skin: wet cloth, fan, cold packs at the neck and armpits
  • Once nausea passes, eat something light and a little salty

Avoid alcohol, high-caffeine energy drinks, and large amounts of sugary soda while recovering.

Get medical care if: symptoms do not improve within an hour of stopping and cooling, vomiting keeps you from holding fluids down, temperature stays above 103°F, confusion or slurred speech appears, sweating stops, or you have a heart, kidney, or other chronic condition. With a pre-existing condition, the threshold to get checked is lower.

How Long Does Heat Exhaustion Last?

It depends on how far it went and how quickly you stopped.

Caught early, with work stopped and cooling started: most of it eases within 30 minutes to a few hours, with a dull headache and fatigue often lingering the rest of the day, and normal by the next morning.

Worked through for a while first: 24 to 48 hours to feel close to normal, with fatigue, mild headache, and reduced heat tolerance for a couple of days after.

Severe enough to need medical care: recovery can run one to two weeks, and heat sensitivity can last considerably longer.

The day-after feeling people describe is real: dull headache, fatigue, low appetite, and a body that just feels off. It generally eases over 24 to 72 hours with rest, fluids, and sleep. If it drags on past a few days, see a doctor.
